Additional information
Murton-cum-Hilton parish, Cumbria

Resting in the western foothills of the English Pennines in the Eden valley of Cumbria a short distance to the east of Appleby-in-Westmorland are the hamlets of Murton and Hilton. Together, these two hamlets and the nearby countryside make up the civil and ecclesiastical parishes of Murton-cum-Hilton. A short distance to the west is Brackenber Moor which was traditionally a place where the local military regiments would exercise and practice their drills.

In the past there used to be some mining and quarrying for minerals in and around the surrounding district. In the modern era it is mainly a pastoral farming community, some commuters and retired people living in the rural idyll of eastern Cumbria [Photograph No. 1]. The small parish church (Church of England) is located between the settlements at Murton and Hilton and is dedicated to St John the Baptist [Photograph No. 2].

Inside the parish church there are two war memorials which are found on the walls of the church. Firstly, there is a brass memorial tablet to the memory of Arnold Gray Burrell, son of a former Vicar of the parish, who died during the Boer War [Photograph No. 3]. Secondly, there is a WW1 ‘Roll of Honour’ [Photograph No. 4]. This lists the parishioners who had enlisted to serve in the Armed Forces in the so-called 'Great War' as of 18 October 1916 (i.e. about the time conscription was introduced).

The main parish war memorial is found in the cemetery, a short distance from the parish church and adjacent to the road between Murton and Hilton [Photograph No. 5]. It takes the form of an obelisk and was originally designed to commemorate the dead of the 1914 – 1918 war by Alec Parkin who designed a number of other memorials in the Eden district. It was originally dedicated on 21 November 1920 and the names of those who died in WW2 were added later. The names of those listed on the memorial can be seen in photograph No. 6.

Let us now look at each of these memorials.
