Additional information

Cumwhinton Village War Memorial

Cumwhinton (with Cotehill) is one of the four townships of Wetheral Parish, situated a short distance from the city of Carlisle, Cumbria (previously Cumberland). The Cumwhinton War Memorial is located next to the village hall [Photograph No 1]. It takes the form of a Celtic cross within a gated compound [Photograph No 2].

Originally the memorial was dedicated following the 1914 - 1918 to the memory of both those villagers who died in the war and to commemorate the villagers who served in the Armed Forces in the war. Their names are engraved on the front of the memorial.

Following the 1939 - 1945 war, the name of another villager who was killed in action in 1942 was added to the memorial. However, the names of all the villagers who served in the war were not added to the memorial.

Stoker John Henry Graham, R.N.

The only WW2 Cumwhinton casualty commemorated on the war memorial is that of Stoker John Henry Graham, R.N. who was lost while serving on the destroyer HMS Belmont (H 46). 'Belmont' was sunk off Halifax, Nova Scotia in the North Atlantic on 31 January 1942 by German submarine (U-82). All of Belmont's 138 crew were lost with her.
