Additional information

Longtown and its War Memorial.

Longtown is a Cumbrian 'Border town' in the north of Cumbria (previously Cumberland). Immediately to the west and north of Longtown is the Scotland - England Border. Gretna Green, the Scottish 'Border town', which has a world-wide fame as the traditional marriage location for eloping couples to have a quick and legal wedding, is about 3 miles (5 kilometres) to the west of Longtown town centre.

Longtown's War Memorial commemorates the 'Fallen' of the two World Wars. It is located at the southern end of Longtown adjacent to the A7 road, the main road which runs through the centre of town. Before the building of motorways the A7 was one of the principal highways linking Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders to Carlisle, Cumberland and southern England.

Immediately behind the War Memorial part of of the Longtown Memorial Hall Community Centre can be seen in Photograph No 1 (above). The Memorial Hall, originally known as the Arthuret Parish War Memorial Hall, was first opened in 1924. It was built as a living and continuing memorial for the locals who had lost their lives in the 1914 - 1918 World War. In 1981 the Memorial Hall was extended. Since 1924 the Memorial Hall has remained an important community asset.

The names of those who are remembered.

Only the names of those who gave their lives in the service of their country have been engraved on the memorial. No ranks or awards are given, nor does the memorial indicate which individuals died in the First World War and which individuals died in the Second World War. The lowest plinth on the reverse of the memorial has one additional name engraved on it:

"Also served
E. BLACKBURN".
