Additional information

Some biographical information

Private John Hughes of Hospital House, Bransty, Whitehaven, Cumberland (now Cumbria) was killed in action in Normandy on 2 August 1944. At the time of his death, Pte. Hughes was 22 years old. He is buried in Bayeux War Cemetery, Calvados, France (Grave Ref. XXVI.D.8).

John Hughes, known as 'Jackie', was the fourth of the five sons of John Hughes and Agnes Hughes (nee Kennedy). Three of his brothers, and his elder sister, Agnes, served in the Armed Forces during the war. John was the only one to lose his life. By the time of his death, John Hughes had been in the army for about three and a half years.

When they were younger, all the boys from the Hughes family had been choirboys at St Begh's R.C. Church, Whitehaven. John Hughes is commemorated in the Borough of Whitehaven WW2 'Book of Remembrance'. His name was submitted to the council for inclusion by his mother Agnes. However, for some reason, John Hughes has been missed off the St Begh's WW2 War memorial.

Dedication

This article is dedicated to Private John Hughes, Queen's Royal Regiment.

In the edition of 'The Whitehaven News' dated Thursday 24 August 1944, one of John Hughes' pals, Billie O'Pray, R.A.F. placed the following tribute in the 'Family Notices' section:

"ON ACTIVE SERVICE

Hughes - In memory of Jackie, killed in action in France on August 2, 1944.

I always thought we'd meet again,
But that had not to be,
And so I keep your smiling face,
Within my memory.

From his pal, Billie O'Pray, R.A.F."
