Colour Sergeant Major Hugh McKeever Phillips, King's Royal Rifles, died on 23 January 1944 at the age of 31. He is buried in Crosthwaite (St Kentigern) churchyard, Keswick, Cumberland (now Cumbria).
The memorial on his headstone reads as follows:
"In memory of C.S.M. Hugh McKeever Phillips, King's Royal Rifles, died January 23rd 1944, aged 31 years. Darling husband of Joan".
Although CSM Phillips is buried in Crosthwaite Churchyard he is not commemorated on the WW2 parish memorial which is located inside the church.
