Josephine Hoogstede 1921-2012

It is with great sadness that I inform you that our Josephine passed away yesterday, 29 January. Older members will remember that this brave and lovely lady made many contributions to the BBC WW2 People's War archive under her nom de plume Odyssey, all of which can be found here

Listening to the forbidden BBC in Holland in 1942.

A well chosen and appropriate tribute, Peter.
Josephine's personal account of her wartime experiences for the BBC "People's War" project is an excellent piece of work.
With the deepest sympathy to all her friends and family.

A heroine of faith and defiance.
May you rest in peace!

Josephine's passing has also been fittingly recorded at another WW2 Website, namely ww2talk.com

I have been re-reading her postings on the BBC People's War Archives, as I hope others will, and thank Peter & Frank for keeping in touch with her during her latter years.

RIP Josephine.

Ron

I had not heard the snowflake analogy of our brief lives before. It was from one of her two sons, Dr Andreas Hoogstede. I think Josephine would have liked it.

I became acquainted with Josephine through the BBC WW2 Peoples War board and we became good friends writing to each other over the years. Although we never met I am sure we would have hit it off in an instant.
Her story was unique as with many Dutch people at that time, I am still in contact with "Anak" Roberte who lately took a long trip back to the old Dutch East Indies with her Mothers ashes.
Josephine was a restless spirit with many mixed memories of of the war and the time after it when the world was still in turmoil.
Josephine will always be remembered by her many friends on these sites.
May God Bless her.
Frank.
