(a) Some biographical information

Driver Walter McCartney, RASC, was born at Cleator Moor, Cumberland (now Cumbria) in 1905. He was the third son of Mr David Richardson McCartney and Mrs Jemima McCartney (nee Paton). The family were well known in the Cleator Moor district as for many years Mr David R. McCartney, who died in 1927, was a butcher on Jacktrees Road in the town.

Also in 1927, Walter married Miss Ann Moore Cowen from the nearby town of Eggremont. Their eldest child was born in West Cumberland before the family moved to Halifax, West Yorkshire where Walter was employed in the electrical department of Halifax Corporation for 12 years before enlisting to the army.

At the time of his death, Walter McCartney had been in the army for a little over four years. He died in the General Hospital in Milan after a short illness. Driver Walter McCartney is buried at Milan War Cemetery, Italy. According to the obituary in 'The Whitehaven News' in January 1946, Walter McCartney was survived by his loving wife, mother and two children.

He is also commemorated on the 'Roll of Honour' of his native town of Cleator Moor.
